Baumé hydrometers are based on the same principle as density meters and consist of a cylindrical instrument, similar to a thermometer but with one end having a larger diameter which is the base and where the float is located and at the other end is the graduation on the Baumé scale (°Be). It is used to measure concentrations of solutions. The measurement of 1 unit of a Baumé degree corresponds to 25 grams of sugar dissolved in 1 litre of distilled water.
The method of converting degrees Baumé for liquid densities greater than water is carried out by means of a formula.
The Baumé aerometer has been designed to measure the concentration or density of liquids denser than water based on assigning the value of 0°Be to pure water and the value of 15°Be to a 10% NaCl solution.
