Borosilicate glass 3.3: distinguished by its very good chemical resistance to water, salt solutions, acids, bases and organic solvents. It is only attacked by hydrofluoric acid and, at high temperatures, by strong bases and phosphoric acid.
Distillation balloons are used in chemistry for the physical process of separating a mixture composed of two substances with different but close boiling points by heating and cooling. By applying a direct flame or with an electric blanket, the spherical base will be heated to bring to boiling and subsequently to evaporation of the substance. Borosilicate glass flasks 3.3 allow this practice due to their resistance to thermal shock. The distillation ball has a long neck and a side arm through which it is connected to a refrigerant by means of which the condensation process will be carried out.
